Sir David Jason calls on public to back Headway charity cyclist
Actor Sir David Jason is urging the public of Aylesbury to get behind Headway Aylesbury Vale by sponsoring cyclist Mick Simmonds on his epic 900-mile ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End.
Businessman Mick, 53, a local painting and decorating contractor, is setting off on July 3 on behalf of Headway, the brain injury charity which moved into Wedgewood Street in Fairford Leys last year.
His aim is that his 10-day ride will raise at least £10,000 to help survivors of Acquired Brain Injury (ABI).
Now he has the support of Sir David, who is one of his customers and who has already pledged some sponsorship money.
Sir David, who lives in Bucks and is famous for TV shows such as Only Fools and Horses and a Touch of Frost, said: “This is a wonderful cause and I do hope Mick will reach his target with help from the local community.
“Headway is a small local charity providing a vital service for people with brain injuries, and it would be fantastic if the public could really get behind it.”
Mick said: “I am delighted with the response from people to my cycle ride, and I am thrilled to have the backing of Sir David Jason.
“I only took up cycling three years ago as a way of getting exercise so people may think I am crazy to do this, especially since I have no back-up team or support vehicle.
“However, I was really keen to support a small locally-based charity that relies heavily on volunteers. Headway Aylesbury Vale fits the bill perfectly and I hope the community of Fairford Leys and beyond will back this by sponsoring me.”
Karen Styles, manager of Headway Aylesbury Vale, said: ” Acquired Brain Injury, which can be caused by an illness, accident, injury or stroke, can literally happen to anyone. There are some 1,500 ABI survivors in the Aylesbury Vale alone and any funds raised will be of massive help to them.”
